Record high winds from Storm Eowyn battered Ireland and Northern Ireland on Friday, leaving almost one-third of Irish homes and businesses without power and forcing cancellation of hundreds of flights and the closure of schools and public transport.

Gusts of up to 93mph (150km/h) have caused multiple power cuts as Storm Éowyn brings severe gales. Thousands of people across Wales are without power and almost 50 schools will remain closed on Friday.

In anticipation of more power outages during the day, SP Networks has organised a series of severe weather refuges for households affected. These “Warm Space” shelter sites, in cafes and community centres, will provide hot drinks and let people charge their mobiles and electrical devices.

Roads have been closed or blocked amid Storm Éowyn as winds of up to 90mph or more, strike the region. Motorists have been urged to take extra care on the region's highways amid an amber warning for wind.
