The devastation from Cyclone Chido that shattered corrugated metal shacks and thousands of lives on the island of Mayotte was both immediate and long coming.

Cyclone Chido not only ravaged Mayotte’s infrastructure but also laid bare tensions between the island’s residents and its migrant population.

New French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou said on Monday that power will be restored to all households on the storm-ravaged Mayotte archipelago by the end of January, while the rebuilding of its shantytowns will not be permitted.
