Kolkata: The convict in the RG Kar hospital rape and murder case, Sanjay Roy, is likely to work as a gardener initially in Presidency Correctional Home where he is lodged, an official said on Wednesday.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will file an appeal before the Calcutta High Court, requesting the death sentence for Sanjay Roy. Roy, who was sentenced to "life imprisonment until death" by a Sealdah court,

The West Bengal government has already approached the high court, challenging the verdict and seeking death penalty for Sanjay Roy.

Sanjay Roy was sentenced to life imprisonment in the RG Kar rape and murder case. A lawyer, appearing on behalf of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), has sought capital punishment for convict Sanjay Roy.

Judge Anirban Das said crime did not fall under “rarest of the rare” category as justification for not giving death penalty to Sanjay Roy.

Kolkata: The Additional District and Sessions Court in Kolkata's Sealdah on Monday sentenced convict Sanjay Roy in the RG Kar rape and murder case to life imprisonment till death. The court observed that it was not "the rarest of the rare" case.

Sanjay Roy has been convicted in the RG Kar rape and murder case of a junior doctor by the Sealdah CBI Court in Kolkata. The court’s decision was based on forensic evidence and DNA matches, leading to a significant punishment for Roy.

The West Bengal government has appealed to the Calcutta High Court`s (HC) Division Bench against the trial court`s life imprisonment verdict handed over to Sanjay Roy in the Kolkata rape-murder case.

Sanjay Roy was held guilty under Sections 66 (rape), 64 (causing injury resulting in death) and 103 (1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The trail court had sought death penalty for Sanjay Roy but was turned down by the trail court, where Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das said that the crime did not fall under the ‘rarest of the rare’ category.
