When a man arrived at a New Hampshire animal shelter last week claiming he wanted to surrender 150 pet mice, the shelter was ready to take them in.

When an overwhelmed man came to a New Hampshire animal shelter last week hoping to surrender 150 mice, shelter employees were ready to assist. He later clarified he had 150 containers of mice.

A man in New Hampshire surrendered nearly 1,000 mice to a local animal shelter and now workers are scrambling because those mice are giving birth to more mice.

The New Hampshire SPCA said it took in close to 400 mice from a Seacoast man who was keeping them in "filthy plastic tubs." There were believed to be hundreds more at his home and many of the females were pregnant. The shelter said it expects the total number of mice to number close to 1,000.

There’s enough to give one mouse to every member of the U.S. Congress and the 424-member New Hampshire Legislature combined.
