Human remains were found in a suitcase floating near Governors Island Wednesday afternoon, according to the NYPD. The NYPD harbor unit recovered the suitcase and the remains were transported to Pier 16 where EMS and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner responded,

The remains of a body were found Wednesday inside a suitcase floating in the East River, police said. The grizzly discovery came after the suitcase was spotted around 5:30 p.m. drifting near Governors Island, cops said. Members of the NYPD Harbor Unit recovered the case and brought it to Pier 16 on South St. near John St. in the Financial District.

The captain, who was aboard the vessel Susan B Anthony, saw the luggage floating in the water late Wednesday afternoon near Governors Island, a largely recreational area just off the southern tip of Manhattan.
