State officials characterized the drought in Massachusetts as being in a "critical" stage across most of the state Tuesday.

After a few more sunny, warm days, some rainfall in the later week is set to provide some “temporary relief” amid the drought and high fire risk around the Boston region, according to National Weather Service forecasts.

Drought conditions have reached significant or critical levels in much of Massachusetts, state officials said.

Because of these drier conditions, Boston and other Massachusetts areas are at high risk for wildfires, Farooqi said. There are currently 47 active wildfires across Massachusetts after wildfires increased by 1,200% in October.
